You have been praying to a sound. The Name is a Being.
WORKING INTERPRETATION Every translation you have ever read renders the divine Name as the LORD, in small caps, set apart, never quite pronounced. For three thousand years people have treated it as a word: a sound to be chanted, a title to be invoked, a button to be pressed. That is the mistake this dossier undoes.
The Name was never a sound. At the burning bush, the answer God gave was not a syllable. It was an act of existence. I AM. Everything you have been handed about the divine, a somebody at the top, a name you call out into the dark, is built on a pronunciation that was never the point. The point was the Being.
You have been praying to a sound. The Name is a Being. And a Being cannot be called out to, it can only be entered.
Take three slow breaths. On each one, say the word “God” in your mind, then let it go before you say it again. You are not losing God. You are dropping the sound so you can meet the Being. When the sound stops, notice what is still there. That is where the Name lives. It was never the syllable. It is the one who is.
The Name is four letters. It means “I AM.”
SCRIPTURE The divine Name is YHWH, four Hebrew letters: Yod, He, Vav, He. It appears roughly 6,800 times across the Hebrew Bible, from Genesis to Malachi. It is not a title. It is the Name.
And its meaning is revealed in one place, and only one. In Exodus 3:14, at the burning bush, God gives the Name as “I AM WHO I AM”, Hebrew אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה, ehyeh asher ehyeh. The letters derive from the Hebrew verb to be (hayah, היה). The Name is not a label for a being. It is the verb of being, made into a name.
So when the text says “the LORD,” it is not naming a character. It is quoting a tense of existence. The Name is the one who is, who was, and who is to come, the self-existent one.
The Name is four letters. Its gematria is 26. Its meaning is a single, eternal verb: I AM.
Open Exodus 3:14. Read it slowly, three times. Do not translate it in your head. Let the words land as a verb, not a noun. “I AM WHO I AM” is not a description of God. It is God happening. When you stop reading it as a name and start hearing it as an act, the whole scripture changes under you. The Name is not a word about God. It is God, speaking in the present tense, forever.
“I AM” means God is Being itself.
TRADITIONAL TEACHING Here is where the Name becomes ontology, the study of what is. The traditional Christian and Scholastic reading of “I AM WHO I AM” is precise: God is not a being among beings. God is Being itself, ipsum esse subsistens, the self-existent ground of all existence.
A “being” is a thing that has existence. A stone is a being. A star is a being. You are a being. Each of them has existence, borrowed, finite, contingent. God is not one of those. God is the act of existing, the source from which every other being receives its existence. Nothing exists that does not participate in the One who IS.
This is not poetry. It is the doctrine the Name grounds. “I AM” is not a claim about what God is like. It is a claim about what God is: the ground of being, the self-existent one, the source of all that is.
A being has existence. God is existence. That is the difference between a name and a Being.
Sit still. Name three things in the room. Now ask, of each one: “Why is there something rather than nothing?” Do not answer with another thing. Let the question sink below the floor. The ground of the question, the one who does not need to be caused, is the I AM. You are not finding it. You are discovering that you are already standing in it. Everything you can name is held by the Name.
Jesus never said “Yahweh.” He said “I am.”
SCRIPTURE This is the point the whole dossier turns on, so it must be exact. The New Testament is in Greek. In the Greek text, Jesus never says the word “Yahweh” and never writes the Tetragrammaton. The divine Name in Greek is always Κύριος (Kyrios, “Lord”) or Θεός (Theos, “God”).
TRADITIONAL TEACHING And that substitution is ancient. Pious Jews did not vocalize the Name. When the text had YHWH, they read Adonai (“my Lord”) in its place. So “the Lord” in the Old Testament is the divine Name, a reverent stand-in, not a different word. The word was never the point. The meaning was.
So what did Jesus do? In John 8:58 he says: “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am”, Greek egō eimi. That is the Greek form of the divine “I AM” from Exodus 3:14. He did not say the word. He claimed the meaning. And the room understood. Their first response was to pick up stones.
Jesus never spoke the word “Yahweh.” He spoke the meaning, “I am”, and in doing so, he claimed the Name for himself. The word was never the point. The Being was.
Hold two words in your mind: “Lord” and “I am.” Notice that “Lord” is a title, something you can give to a king, a master, a teacher. “I am” is a verb, something that happens. Jesus took the title the world gives to power and turned it into the verb of existence. When you hear “the Lord” in the scripture, do not hear a name. Hear the Name, the one who is. The title points to the verb. The verb is the Being.
The God of “I AM” holds everything.
TRADITIONAL TEACHING If God is Being itself, the ground of all existence, then the divine is not a member of the universe. It is the universe’s ground. Every being, every world, every atom and every law of physics participates in the one who IS. Nothing is outside it. Nothing is excluded.
WORKING INTERPRETATION This is what “all-inclusive” means, and it is the opposite of the exclusive God most people were handed. The exclusive God is a competitor, a being on the inside of the universe, rivaling everything else for your attention. The inclusive God is the ground, the one in whom everything already exists. You do not have to choose between God and the world. The world is in God. The stars, the seasons, your body, the equinox, all of it is held by the Name.
The God who is Being itself does not compete with creation. It is creation’s ground. That is why the Name can be at the center of the cosmic order without swallowing it. The center holds the circle. It does not replace it.
You do not have to choose between God and the world. The world is in God. The Name is the ground, not the competitor.
Look at something ordinary, a cup, a tree, your own hand. Do not analyze it. Just let it be. Now ask: “What is it that this thing is in, that allows it to exist at all?” Do not answer with another object. Let the answer be the ground, the I AM. The cup is not competing with God. The cup is in God. The whole universe is in the Name. You are not outside the divine. You are held by it, right now, in the ordinary.
The goal is one. Not more gods. Not less.
WORKING INTERPRETATION Everything in this dossier points to one move: unify, not separate. The Name is not separate from the cosmos. The cosmos is not separate from you. You are not separate from the Name. The whole doctrine is a single line: the self-existent “I AM” is the center of the cosmic order, and the cosmic order is the body of the Name.
This is the shape in the sigil. A star, the five-pointed order of the cosmos, with the Name at its center. The center does not destroy the star. It is the star’s reason for being. The four letters of the Name map, in the Kabbalistic teaching, to the four worlds, the four planes of reality. The Name is the architecture of the divine. And the star is the architecture of the cosmos. They are the same architecture, seen from two sides.
So the work is not to add more gods, or to subtract them. It is to see the one, the self-existent I AM, at the center of everything, and to stop separating the divine from the world, the world from yourself, and yourself from the divine.
The point is one. Not more gods. Not less. The Name at the center of the order, and the order in the Name. Unify, not separate.
Close your eyes. Bring to mind the whole of your life, the people, the places, the seasons, the years. Now find the center of it. Not a memory. Not a person. The ground of it, the one who was there before the first memory and will be there after the last. That is the I AM. You are not adding a god to your life. You are discovering the center that was always holding it. Unify, not separate. The center is the Name. The Name is the one who is.
You were never outside the Name. Now go live in it.
You have the line. The Name is four letters. It means “I AM.” “I AM” means God is Being itself, the ground of all that is. Jesus never spoke the word; he spoke the meaning, and claimed it for himself. The God of “I AM” holds everything. And the goal is one: unify, not separate.
Nothing here asks you to believe a new religion. It asks you to see the one that was always there, the self-existent ground at the center of the order, the Name that is not a word but a Being, the center that holds the star and the star that is the center.
You were never outside the Name. You are in it, right now, reading it. The Name is the one who is. And the one who is, is in you.
Thank you, and I love you.
